The Special Areas is a rural municipality in central Alberta. Special Area No. 4 was incorporated in January 1, 1969. As of the 2011 Census, it had an approximate population of 1400 scattered across the villages of Consort and Veteran and the hamlets of Altario, Compeer, Kirriemuir and Monitor. It neighbors Special Area No. 3 to the south and Special Area No. 2 to the south east.

The Special Areas is administered by a board of four members which is appointed by Lieutenant Governor in Council. The Land under the Special Areas is normally leased to locals for pasture, cultivation and oil and gas exploration. The land includes 175,000 acres of Crown Lands which are set aside for community pastures.

The region features various recreational parks which include the Prairie Oasis Park and the Blood Indian Park which are frequented for camping, boating, fishing and other leisure activities.
